The Ghan. It‘s an ood name for a train but in Australian history it is a living legend.
The Ghan, historical australian Railway, which offers amazing and gogeous moments and synonymous with outback Australia. There are to typs of journeys one is Darwin to Adelaide – 4 days and 3 nights – or Adelaide to Darwin – 3 days and 3 nights. The hole trak as it is today, has been initiated in the year 2004 and the trip how this exists now was startet in the year 2015. Trip length in total 2979 km.
The history as also how the Ghan got is name are unique. During the 19th century, when the first expetitions through the Outback were started to build a telegraph line from Adelaide to Alice Springs, lots of people of other countries were needed to build the train trak. They came from Pakistan, Iran, Afgahnistan and some more. and the brougth also the camels, which were needed to get through the desert (Outback). The people and camles bulided the railway line and the telegraph line. The railway line originaly was build from Adelaide to Oodnadatta then zu Alice Springs. It‘s exactly 90 years since the first Ghan left Adelaide Railway Station and this is also celebrated on the trip.
The worker at this time called the cameleers „Afghans“. „The Ghan Express” name originated with train crews in the 1890s as a taunt to officialdom because, when an expensive sleeping car was put on from Quorn to Oodnadatta, “on the first return journey the only passenger was an Afghan”, mocking its commercial viability.
The Ghan is operated by the „Great Southern Railway“ and they offer an exiting, amazing and unique experiance with it. During the hole trip there are excursions included and for that reason, some stopps are made.
First day: From Darwin up to Katherine, NT, the excursion top is in Alice Springs, here the choice of excursions is more varied, tory tour, flight to Uluru (Ayers Rock – additional fee) or 12 km bike tour in the outback of Alice Spring.
